Erica Quitzow: an exclusive interview

Interview - A great artist a young woman. In one word: a real indie woman. An exclusive interview to Erica Quitzow.

Give to the Italian audience an abstract of your life in 4 lines. Who is Erica Quitzow?
I’m a musician, music teacher and I co-run a record label, Young Love Records. I spend my time practicing, recording and taking care f the business of the label.

You decided to start to write song and compose music because…
I decided to focus on music because it’s an incredible expression and doesn’t have to be done in solitude like maybe painting or writing. I do end up working alone a lot in the recording process, but  sometimes I work with friends and I almost always play with a band live. The full band is rehearsing right now, that’s a pleasure.

Which are the main difficulties to be composer, producer, singer and songwriter at the same time?
The endless work. It’s amazing to collaborate and watch a project just come together so effortlessly when there are other hands involved. But I feel the need to have a project that’s mostly my own at the moment. I imagine that will change and continue to change.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music and lyrics?
Everywhere, everyday life. A lot of my lyrics are based on conversations with friends, experiences that seem common, a story that feels familiar that I think will feel familiar to a lot of people.

Can you give us a picture of an artist daily life? I wake up in the morning and…
Get online, respond to emails and do the business of running the label. Right now I’m securing worldwide distribution for Young Love Records. Then I either teach lessons in the afternoon or maybe play classical violin at a wedding or play violin or cello on someone else’s recording. Often there’s a recording session going on at the house so I have to creep around my home quietly, my partner Gary from Setting Sun runs a commercial recording studio in our home. I’m most creative at night. These days I’m figuring out how to play the songs from ‘Juice Water’ live for our upcoming tours. I’m also writing and recording songs for film and TV, that also happens late-night.

Can you give us some advices about good US indie music (bands, festivals, artists)?
I’m loving Setting Sun, Live Footage and Landing on the Moon, thus they are all on our Young Love Records! I also am listening to Micachu, though they’re from the UK, Amanda Palmer, and Neon Indian are both American.

In the next months you will start… touring, writing, quitting job…
I’ll be touring the EU and UK in May and the US this summer. My job’s pretty flexible. I set some students up with another teacher or some just take a vacation.

When you think about Italian indie music, what is the first thing comes in to your mind?
Our friends at Ghost Records and The Pink Rays from Milan.

Here an article about her last album ”Juice Water”
